Nancy Walkup
Nancy Walkup is the editor of SchoolArts, a magazine for art educators published since1901 and a contributing author, along with Marilyn Stewart, Eldon Katter, and Laura Chapman, for Explorations in Art, Davis Publications’ elementary textbook series.
Nancy's over thirty-year teaching experience covers all grade levels from kindergarten through university. Highlights of her career includes serving as project coordinator and director for the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts (NTIEVA), a national art education initiative funded in part by the Getty Institute and the Annenberg Foundation.
Nancy was also the conference chair for the 2001 National Art Education Association conference held in New York City. She has also won numerous art education awards from the art education associations of Texas and Louisiana, as well as the National Art Education Association. Most recently, she was named NAEA Western Region Art Educator of the Year, 2015; and Elementary Art Educator of the Year, TAEA, 2010.
She recently ended her tenure as Elementary Director of NAEA and is the Director Emeritus of NTIEVA. Nancy's honors include serving as an invited teacher at an elementary school in Beijing,China, 2007; selection for the Japanese Fulbright Memorial Teacher program in 2008; and being named 2007 Teacher of the Year for her campus.
Nancy has published, with Pam Stephens, Bridging the Curriculum through Art:
Interdisciplinary Connections, a book for art teachers and pre-service students, just
released in its revised third edition. She has co-authored Take 5 art print sets published by Crystal Productions, instructional units for CRIZMAC Art and Cultural Materials, and various other curriculum projects.
Nancy also presents regularly at NAEA and at other state art education conferences (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Florida, Kansas, Michigan, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming), and similar venues and serves as an art education consultant for school districts and publishers.
In addition, Nancy leads annual summer seminars for art educators in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Special areas of interest include issues of social justice and diversity, advocacy, interdisciplinary connections, and STEAM.
